COMPLEXITY PARAMETERIZED-01

Baghdad, Sep 10-12, 2017

// Introduction

This workshop is an introductory workshop to parametric design. It will explore tools and techniques of the parametric design space using grasshopper - the generative modeling plug-in for Rhinoceros. It will also include a lecture and presentations on the subject of complexity in natural systems and how to incorporate it as a design tool.

The recent development of sophisticated computational design tools has instigated new ways of integrating computation in the design process; both within architecture and engineering disciplines. The new set of digital tools has infiltrated a bottom up system to open the design space towards a high level of complexity. The integration of these tools allowed the architect to generate and control complex information derived from a manifold of sources. Consequently, a more complex architectural order emerged as a reflection of sophisticated adaptive structures.

Complexity Parameterized is a 3-day workshop that has been designed for participants with no previous experience in Grasshopper or parametric design techniques. The program will introduce them to both the theoretical and technical knowledge required to explore possibilities of the new design medium.

// Methodology

Program has been structured to teach participants the use of grasshopper as a generative tool, and how to integrate it within a real design exercise. Throughout the use of visual scripting with Grasshopper, participants will learn how to build and manage parametric data structures (from basic simple lists to complex data trees) and to develop data driven geometry and envelops.

The workshop technical tutorials will include:
- Software interface
- Components
- Lists & Data Tree: management, manipulation, visualization
- Geometry generation from data stream
- Basic exercises (Attractor field, Surface subdivision, Morphing)
- Advanced exercise: Data-reactive component – data-reactive tessellation on NURBS surface.
- Data flow: data tree & path mapping
- Mesh syntax & construction
- Mesh tessellation and subdivision tools [Lunchbox & Weaverbird]
- Geometry instantiation – mesh powercopy
- Application of the learned techniques in a parametric design exercise.

// Software & skills:
Basic modeling skill in Rhino is preferred, but not mandatory. Participants should bring their own laptop with pre-installed software (software download links will be given after subscription).
