Non-linear formations aims to explore the potential of generative growth processes to produce formations of different scale and complexity. Contrary to linear parametric processes where the outcome is directly linked to a certain parameter or variable in the logic, iterative negotiations in nonlinear systems produce different degrees of adaptability. Through the use of a relatively simple algorithms, a large degree of complexity could emerge through numerous iterative calculations. The process will be directed towards the realization of the generated forms using 3d printing technology.
Natural growth processes share common traits such as being non-linear, rule-based, and iterative. Drawing a parallel between natural systems behavior and computer growth processes such as branching systems, diffusion limited aggregation and other rule-based production systems, we will develop non-linear growth processes and will evaluate the spatial results and forms across a wide range of scales - from Material to Architectural scale.
The four-day workshop program is set to introduce participants to the principles of non-linear iterative processes such as Branching system and DLA (Diffusion Limited Aggregation), then apply these principles in the development of formations of different scale and complexity that can be realized using 3d printing technology.
After spending two days exploring the tools, techniques, and working on selected growth techniques, we will apply the learned techniques to develop a rule-based growth system on a variety of scales. System differentiation will be achieved in response to defined growth techniques and applied force- fields. The design exercises will aim to explore different formations based on a feedback loop between relevant drives and a performance criteria as set by the participant.

Using algorithmic design technique with Rhino and grasshopper, the proposed methodology involves establishing a field of negotiation that will be manipulated in the form-generating process. Through the development of the system, priorities will be established to indirectly guide the system towards particular solutions. The role of the designer thus will shift from controlling the outcome to guiding the process towards possible outcomes. The final result will represent the outcome of numerous complex negotiations between essential parameters and the design intent as set by the designer.

On the third day, participants will be divided into groups to develop their own concept. The groups will explore natural systems as a reference for their growth behavior, and will investigate their potential in relation to their concept. The design intent will be guided away from the production of a single outcome, with a deeper focus on the process of generation and adaptation. As these processes are behavioral at their core, they allow information to organize into a coherent system able to produce heterogeneous spatial outcomes of increasing complexity from simple sets of basic rules. This systematic variety allows the designer to steer away from the simple linear parametric scheme, opening up the design space towards new potential forms of correlation between behavior-based spatial systems and 3d printing technology.
In addition to the technical part, the workshop will also include lectures on the subject by Mateusz Zwierzycki, and Zayad Motlib.
